As we have stepped into February experiencing an unusually cold Central Florida winter, we for the same reason give thanks for so many have endured much worse. Yet there is a palpable sense of transition in the air. We soon will be collectively shaking off the bite of winter’s frost, watching as the landscape begins its slow, quiet preparation for the coming spring. In the same way that the earth anticipates a thaw, I feel too our congregation is in a beautiful season of warming up—spiritually and communally. Many of us are ready to bust free from a hibernation of the spirit. Eager to experience new warmth and adventure of a life free of the ties that bind our heartland souls
We are continuing our sermon series on Spiritual Disciplines. These aren’t just religious exercises or items to check off a to-do list; they are the "holy habits" that stir the embers of our faith. By engaging in prayer, meditation, study, and simplicity, we are softening the soil of our hearts, making them ready for the seeds the Spirit wishes to plant.
All of this preparation leads us to a significant milestone in our liturgical year. On Wednesday, February 18th, we mark Ash Wednesday. This day signals the start of a very special Lenten journey—a forty-day season where we move from theory to practice.
While we have been learning about the disciplines in our current series, Lent will be our opportunity to put them into intentional practice. It is a time to strip away the malaize that has accumulated over the winter months and refocus our gaze entirely on the cross.
I encourage you to use these days and weeks of February to ask the Lord: “Which discipline{s} are you calling me to lean into this Lent?” Whether it is a fast from a specific habit or to feast on a new rhythm of prayer, let us approach the Lenten starting line of Ash Wednesday - February 18th with expectant hearts. Let us Pray and Fast for our hearts in bondage. God will not abandon you. The winter frost will melt away, and the colors and warmth of the new life of Spring awaits. Don't miss it!
May the warming sun remind you of the constant warmth of God’s grace. I look forward to walking this path toward the Resurrection with each of you.
Blessings,
Pastor David
